Letting the Sun in

Clarity is orgasmic. Here it happened when The Purple Frog got to know that its cherry tomatoes are going to procreate sometime in April and they won’t even die before that. They will flourish this winter and breed once the weather starts to become warmer. They are flourishing, indeed.

This clarity was given by Sriram of My Sunny Balcony and he assures and reassures many amateur gardeners every day.

Because that’s what he and his three partners, Reena, Shailesh and Athreya (all very young) have vowed to give back to Bangalore…its gardening culture.

What do they do at My Sunny Balcony

They set up green corners. In the lil lil balconies of Bangalore and in many bigger spaces too. They get everything made from the local craftsmen and design-wise the idea is to take a break from the traditional bells and gods and that done-to-death pure Indian ethnic outdoor décor.

That resonates with The Purple Frog.

End-to-End Gardening Solutions

That’s some jargon…in your face you Dilberts. Lol

MSB gives a long plant care manual along with all this. Yet, when the plants die in the hands of newbies, Sriram again assures, some plants will always die even in the hands of experts.

 So what to do?

Turn this wow-sounding, glamorous interest into a real passion. Accept its murk and get your hands dirty and do it and do it and do it again and again in different ways. And someday when you will look back, you will notice, you’ve come a long way : )

Green Up

MSB travels. They have an online store, shops, Facebook presence and everything else that makes them approachable. So reach them.

 Make-It-Yourself

It’s not landscaping with highly evolved decorators where you need to plan out of life savings. It’s not even a hire-a-Maali and paint-your-pots kind of incomplete experience.

The Purple Frog Verdict

It’s personal. It’s raw enough for personalisation too. You can imagine, go through books, mix and match, call MSB, dirty your own hands and rightfully claim Made-It-Myself : )

What Next

There is a very interesting, kinda scientific DIY Self-Watering Pot, the steps for which have been shared by My Sunny Balcony. It is apt for frequently traveling gardeners and even has decoupage to it. So watch this space for that.

Thing This Week

Chalkboard paint made with black acrylic colour and grout (desi choona…lol). Painted it over an empty pot. Sriram insists that people must learn to grow their own food. Mumbai is great for spinach, he tells.

The Purple Frog is second only to Popeye in its love for spinach. Mint is first love. So this pot here has a fragrant, minty future.

Today’s Special: Paper Masala

The Purple Frog likes people who get hurt by spicy reactions or can get moist-eyed with something many others find easy to digest. What seems juvenile can also be seen as someone having been able to protect a sweet, sensitive part of themselves which is what makes their presence that much more comforting on an everyday basis.

And everyday life is what counts the most. Adding to the charm of everyday life is Sky Goodies with its DIY Paper Craft Kits.

After meeting Misha & Amit in their workshop (which they often call Santa’s workshop) and hearing stories about how many people write back to them about how much they enjoyed their DIY kits, the feeling was YAY.

That’s what the heart cherishes. MAKING.

So The Purple Frog has been hopping around to see what all is going on in this planet and how the hell do they do it. This hop was right here at Khar West, Mumbai.

Mavericks This Week

Misha & Amit who love the colour and chaos of India. However, here, they do miss that spirit of making cool stuff that’s quite visible in other countries.

Their Thing

Sky Goodies. They do wild stuff with paper. Lol.

For Now

DIY Paper Craft Kits. Within that, the Gift Boxes are adorable. One suitcase box looks like Louis Vuitton-gone-kitsch.

The latest DIY Tank Box is Misha’s favourite. She feels this urge to create value through her work and this Tank is her way of spreading the message Make Happy, Not War.

Can’t resist telling this. When she went on and on about how much she wants to do meaningful work and someday give people a shop where they lose themselves to the fun things she will keep there, it was heartwarming : )

For Ever

Apart from being together, the two want to just create so many things in so many varied directions. There is paper at one end and then there is technology that has been their bread and butter since forever now.

The Purple Frog prediction: Intricate products made from simple material will get them to stand out in the future.

 Where Can You Spot Them

Exhibitions are hot with them. It’s their thing. They just pick their Taam-Jhaam and team and just leave for any place that’s called exhibition. So it was easy to figure. Their favourite vacation spots are The Lil Flea and the Kala Ghoda madness. That’s when they actually turn into Santa’s workshop.

Apart from that, they have a website where you can see the entire catalogue and order what you like: www.skygoodies.co

You can also chase them through their Facebook page like other obsessed customers who sound like DIY Zombies. They have tried all the kits and keep asking for more and more and more. Lol.

Oh Boy, What a Toy

Got two, tried one. Really enjoyed.  Got tired. That’s the joy of DIY. Good Sleep. Woke up. Added strings and figured this way of using the ornaments.

Happy Children’s Day

It’s an important day today. Children’s Day, by far, is the most relevant occasion that has been passed on to us. At whatever age or place we are in, two things we all can think of on this day…

— Raising a human life, is it even my cup of tea?

— If I have one in my hands, am I subjecting my child to be me or my idea of perfect?

For the first one, if the answer is no. That’s honesty.

If the answer is yes, definitely you are better than many. So just a thought – how about making someone else’s mistake right. Bringing home who has already come to the world. Obviously, it’s a hard irreversible tabooed choice that can change your life dramatically. Yet, for someone who is confident of raising a human life, may be the next distance that can be thought about being covered is to make such a choice.

So what Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt have done ain’t a branding tactic. They have made it big. They can afford raising many children. How many who can afford have the heart to do it! Even if, deep inside, their biological children hold a dearer place, they are giving home care, education, family time, warmth and their wealth. All of this is better than that child having got none of it ever at all. Heartwarming : )

And for the second question, just being able to face that question is enough. Lol.

Thing for the day

Favourite childhood memory is wearing lotsa bangles, chunky chan-chan payals, with a dupatta clad like a sari. Two favourite girls are named Desire and they love bangles. Keeping them in mind, that’s the thing today.
